WEEKEND RUGBY 30-11-15

FRIDAY

EDINBURGH 32-13 DRAGONS

HIDALGO CLYNE DOUBLE GIVES EDINBURGH BONUS POINT WIN

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne slotted a penalty to secure the home side's first points but Dorian Jones soon levelled for the Dragons.

Edinburgh restored their lead with impressive tight-head Nel burrowing through the Dragons defence from close range.

Hidalgo-Clyne successfully converted before adding a further penalty as the home side monopolised territory and possession.

Dragons kept in touch with fly-half Jones cutting Edinburgh's advantage to seven points with his second penalty.

Edinburgh started the second half in the same vein, enjoying typical supremacy in the scrummage - Nel saw two looseheads, Boris Stankovich and Phil Price, yellow-carded after too many infringements, resulting in uncontested scrums.

Despite being down to 13 men, Dragons withstood home pressure but their defensive resistance was broken by Dickinson as Edinburgh showed a somewhat novel offloading abandon and verve in the wider channels.

Hidalgo-Clyne added the conversion and Dragons were dealt a further blow when fly-half Jones was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle in the build-up to the try.

Stankovich returned to the action with his side still under pressure and as Jones returned to the field, Cudd became the fourth player to be sin-binned.

The 14 men defended doggedly but Edinburgh scored a third try when Brown drove over from close range, although Hidalgo-Clyne failed to convert.

The game opened up during the final five minutes and although Will Helu was bundled into touch just short of the line, Edinburgh's fourth try of the game secured a bonus point.

Scott's try was converted by replacement Blair Kinghorn but Dragons had the final word with Cudd crossing, converted by Jones

Edinburgh seemed to be on a different level on Friday night with this big win and seem to have that International advantage going forward.

GLASGOW 13-6 TREVISO

ASHE TRY GIVES GLASGOW WIN

A late Adam Ashe try snatched victory for Glasgow Warriors on Friday night against an impressive Benetton Treviso.

The Italian visitors are winless this season and lie bottom of the Pro12.

But they had led for much of this match through two Jayden Hayward penalties.

The Warriors could not break Treviso's resistance, until number eight Ashe's 72nd minute effort from a five-metre scrum, with replacement pivot Duncan Weir adding a conversion and a late penalty to seal the win.

This is the team who won the pro 12 last year you would not think it but there does seem to ne a difference between Scottish and Glasgow rugby going forward. I think that Glasgow will definitely improve as the season goes on .

LEINSTER 8-3 ULSTER

CRONAN TRY GIVES LEINSTER BIG WIN

Ulster failed to break Leinster's firm defence and slipped to a disappointing Pro12 derby defeat at the RDS.

Sean Cronin's 37th-minute try was the difference between the teams in a dour game dominated by defences.

Jonny Sexton and Paddy Jackson traded penalties with Leinster leading 8-3 at the interval, and neither side scored in a slow-paced second half.

Ulster seem to be in a few problems this year but we have now seen the first glimpse of Leinster being the best in Europe and I hop they get back to that level but this was a poor game with no score in the entire second half

SATURDAY

MUNSTER 12-18 CONNACHT

CONNACHT WIN TOP 2 MATCH AS O HALARAN IS THE HERO OF THE NIGHT

Pro12 leaders Connacht clinched a first competitive win at Thomond Park since 1986 with victory in the top-two clash.

Tiernan O'Halloran's opportunist try helped Connacht move 10-0 ahead but the deficit was halved by the break thanks to a maul try from Niall Scannell.

Connacht centre Craig Ronaldson fired over a penalty before a converted penalty try saw the hosts close to within a point.

Bundee Aki's late try sealed a win to take Connacht four clear at the top.

In rugby terms Connacht are normally the punching bags of Irish rugby but this season they are showing that they have a team that can do well. This was a big match for Connacht and I think that this is a game that will change Connacht rugby as people noticed it

OSPREYS 13-6 BLUES

JONES TRY WINS WELSH DERBY

The home team trailed 6-0 to two Jarrod Evans penalties after an hour, but Alun Wyn Jones' try turned the tide.

Fly-half Sam Davies converted, kicked two penalties and gave a superb display of tactical kicking after replacing the injured Dan Biggar at half-time

Blues lost Wales captain Sam Warburton, who limped off with an ankle injury during the first half.

SUNDAY

SCARLEETS 20-12 ZEBRE

DAVIES TRY GIVES SCARLETS BIG WIN

Scarlets survived a spirited second-half comeback by Zebre to claim a hard-earned 20-12 home win in the Pro12.

The Welsh region scored tries through Hadleigh Parkes and Aled Davies in the opening 12 minutes and led 17-0 at half-time.

But two touchdowns by number eight Andries Van Schalkwyk brought Zebre back to within a score with 20 minutes remaining in atrocious weather

Steven Shingler's late penalty finally sealed the win for the Scarlets

27-11-15 English premiership rugby

Friday

Northampton v Gloster

I think that Gloster are a good side but I think that home advantage will make this a relatively easy win for Northampton. I think that Gloster are not ready for the power that Gloster have

Saturday

Sale v Newcastle

Newcastle have not picked up a point this season and I do not see too much advance since last season and that is why I see this as a comfortable win for sale but they will find it difficult to get the bonus point.

Exeter v Harlequins

Exeter seem to be one of the improving teams this season and I think that a few coaches will go to see Exeter play this season. |I think that because this is a top of the table clash will make the game tight but I think Exeter will win by less than 7.

Saracens V Wooster

Saracens are on form this season and showing that they are doing very well. I think that this should be a bonus point win for them but could not be certain of the bonus point

Irish V Wasps

Irish will find this match very hard but I can see them getting the bonus point in defeat which will get their season off to a start

Sunday

Leister V Bath

I am not that sure what will happen in a game like this as I think that Leister are one of the strongest teams at the moment but Bath are improving to and I think this game will be an epic going one way and the other and be very difficult to call. I think that Leister will win by less than three

27-11-15 rugby pro 12

Pro 12

Friday

Edinburgh v Dragons

Edinburgh: Greig Tonks; Tom Brown, Chris Dean, Matt Scott, Will Helu; Phil Burleigh, Sam Hidalgo-Clyne; Alasdair Dickinson, Ross Ford, WP Nel, Alex Toolis, Fraser McKenzie, Mike Coman (capt), John Hardie, Cornell Du Preez.

Replacements: Neil Cochrane, Rory Sutherland, John Andress, Jamie Ritchie, Hamish Watson, Sean Kennedy, Mike Allen, Blair Kinghorn.

Newport Gwent Dragons: Carl Meyer;Tom Prydie, Adam Hughes, Adam Warren, Ashton Hewitt; Dorian Jones, Charlie Davies; Boris Stankovich, Elliot Dee, Shaun Knight, Matthew Screech, Rynard Landman (capt), Nick Crosswell, Ollie Griffiths, Ed Jackson.

Replacements: Thomas Rhys Thomas, Phil Price, Lloyd Fairbrother, Cory Hill, Nic Cudd, Sarel Pretorius, Jason Tovey, Ross Wardle.

I think that this will be a very close game with no more than a kick between the 2 sides. I would have to go with Edinburgh for the win as I think that they have got more quality in their squad

Glasgow v Treviso

Glasgow Warriors: Stuart Hogg, Taqele Naiyaravoro, Mark Bennett, Alex Dunbar, Sean Lamont, Finn Russell, Grayson Hart, Gordon Reid, Shalva Mamukashvili, Mike Cusack, Tim Swinson, Jonny Gray (captain), Rob Harley, Chris Fusaro, Adam Ashe.

Replacements: James Malcolm, Ryan Grant, Sila Puafisi, Greg Peterson, Josh Strauss, Ali Price, Duncan Weir, Sam Johnson.

Benetton Treviso: Luke McLean (captain), Andrea Pratichetti, Tommaso Iannone, Sam Christie, Simone Ferrari, Jayden Hayward, Chris Smylie, Matteo Zanusso, Ornel Gega, Filippo Filippetto, Filo Paulo, Jeff Montauriol, Marco Barbini, Francesco Minto, Braam Steyn.

Replacements: Luca Bigi, Alberto De Marchi, Salesi Manu, Dean Budd, Marco Lazzaroni, Andrea De Marchi, Edoardo Gori, James Ambrosini.

Glasgow needs to get a win in this type of match and I would be surprised if they did not get the bonus point with them getting there team back from the world cup and no sense of the  team working together this tie could be tricky

Leinster v Ulster

Ulster: P Nelson; A Trimble, D Cave, S McCloskey, C Gilroy; P Jackson, R Pienaar; K McCall, R Best (capt), W Herbst, I Henderson, D Tuohy; R Diack, S Reidy, N Williams

Replacements: R Herring, A Warwick, R Lutton, R Wilson, C Henry, P Marshall, I Humphreys, L Ludik

Leinster: R Kearney; Z Kirchner, Ben Te'o, I Madigan, L Fitzgerald; J Sexton, L McGrath; J McGrath, S Cronin, T Furlong; D Toner, M McCarthy; R Ruddock, J van der Flier, J Heaslip (capt).

Replacements: J Tracy, P Dooley, M Moore, R Molony, D Ryan, E Reddan, N Reid, G Ringrose.

I think that with neither team doing that well in Europe there teams have not gelled and this is probably the match to do that I could see an easy win for both but think it will be close. I think Leinster will win by more than 7 but find it difficult to get the bonus point.

Saturday

Ospreys v Blues

The blues have not had the form to make you think that anything less than a comfortable win for the Ospreys will be possible. I think that the Ospreys will find this a lot trickier and think they will get the bonus point but not much more than that

Munster v Connacht

2 teams on the top of the table and Connacht are the team sitting on top and I do not think that will change on Saturday as I think that it is taking a lot more time for certain teams to advance and I think that Connacht have little to change while Munster have a lot. I think that Connacht will win  by a fair margin but find not get the bonus point.

Sunday

Scarlet’s v Zebre

Anything here except for a Scarlet’s bonus point will be a huge disappointment especially as they are the best Non Irish team in the league

22-11-15 rugby results

WASPS 32-6 TOLON
HUGHES DOUBLE GIVES WASPS BONUS POINT

Nathan Hughes scored two tries as Wasps secured a bonus-point win over defending champions Toulon to move four points clear at the top of Pool Five in the European Champions Cup.

Wasps scored twice in the first 10 minutes via Hughes and Ruaridh Jackson.

Jackson and Elliot Daly added a penalty apiece with Jonathan Pelissie landing two for Toulon, champions three years in a row, to make it 20-6 at half-time.

Further tries from Frank Halai and Hughes secured Wasps' bonus point

As much as the win over Leinster was a good win for Wasps Leinster are trying to sort out problems and the pro 12 might look different this year. Toloun are the best team in Europe by a distance. This is a brilliant win for wasps and I would be disappointed if they did not reach the quarter finals.

CLERMOMNT AUVERGNE 34-29 OSPREYS
STRETTLE DOUBLE GIVES CLERMOUNT BONUS POINT

Ospreys scored two tries in the final two minutes to secure two bonus points in their European Champions Cup defeat at Clermont Auvergne.

The home side opened a commanding 20-3 half-time lead with tries from David Strettle and Aurelien Rougerie.

Tries from Justin Tipuric and Eli Walker put Ospreys back in contention, before Strettle and Wesley Fofana scored to take Clermont clear again.

But Ospreys salvaged bonus points when Sam Parry and Tom Habberfield crossed.

Habberfield's try was a spectacular length of the field effort in the final play of the game from the re-start following Parry's score two minutes from time.

I think that this result says that there is not that much of a gap between the money of the French League and the pro 12. I think that the Osprey could be the Pro 12 team to reach the quarters

21-11-15 saturday rugby

SATURDAY

BATH 19-16 LEINSTER
FORD TRY AND BOOT GIVES BATH WIN

Bath opened their delayed European Champions Cup campaign with a hard-fought win against Leinster

A George Ford penalty and drop-goal gave the hosts a 6-3 lead at the break.#

The England fly-half added a second penalty after the break but Ireland 10 Johnny Sexton's brace, to add to his first-half kick, levelled matters

Bath scored a penalty try from a scrum, only for Leinster to level through Josh van der Flier's converted try, but a third Ford penalty saw Bath edge home

Leinster need to improve and fast as this was not the Leinster we have seen before and I think that the system this year does seem to be set up for the English and French teams.

TREVISO 3-36 LEICESTER
VEAINU DOUBLE SECURES LEICESTER BONUS POINT

After their scrum had won a penalty try, two fine scores from the backs saw Tigers stretch clear in Italy.

Tonga full-back Veainu raced on to Tommy Bell's grubber, before the full-back sent Peter Betham over in the corner to make it 22-3 at the break.

Veainu's solo try earned the bonus before Greg Bateman pin-balled over.

Tongan Veainu may well think he should have had a hat-trick after a spectacular finish in the corner, but the TMO ruled he had knocked on.

In tricky, rain-affected conditions Leicester dominated the opening 40 minutes and with three tries in the bag by the break looked locked on for the bonus point.

But, after Veainu had seen what would have been a superb effort ruled out by the TMO early in the second half, Treviso enjoyed their best spell of the match.

They were on top for 20 minutes, with their scrum finally firing, but could not add to their solitary first-half penalty and Leicester eventually managed to regain control.

An attack from the two-time champions broke down but Veainu - who scored two tries in the World Cup - rescued the ball and beat four men in a confined space with some sizzling footwork to score under the posts.

Replacement hooker Bateman put a gloss on the score as he bounced off several attackers to add a fifth try for Tigers with the last play of the match.

There is very little that you can nlear

SCARLETS 12-29 RACING
MASOE TRY GIVE RACING EARLY START

Scarlets were stunned by tries from Maxime Machenaud, Joe Rokocoko, Chris Masoe and Marc Andreu as Racing opened a 26-0 lead in the opening 40 minutes.

Flanker Bernard Le Roux was sent off for a stamp on Phil John within five minutes of the re-start.

But Scarlets managed only two tries through Aled Thomas and Lewis Rawlins

Even when reduced to 13 men by Ben Tameifuna's yellow card in the 65th minute, Racing conceded only seven points and managed a penalty through full-back Johannes Goosen and held on comfortably to inflict a first home defeat of the season on the Welsh region

Racing is one of the best teams in Europe and I think that they can improve even more than this match against the scarlet’s

GLASGOW 15-26 NORTHAMPTON
TUALA DOUBLE GIVES NORTHAMPTON WIN

Winger Ahsee Tuala touched down twice after George Pisi's early try against an oddly slack Warriors outfit.

Peter Horne and Josh Strauss scored for the hosts, who were outmuscled up-front, and too imprecise to capitalise on their second-half dominance.

This defeat deals a significant blow to their quarter-final aspirations.

Having missed an early opportunity, Scotland fly-half Finn Russell opened the scoring with a confident penalty on four minutes as Glasgow started brightly.

But things rapidly turned sour for the Warriors, as Russell's opposite number, Stephen Myler hoisted a towering garryowen into the Glasgow 22, and Stuart Hogg failed to claim it, allowing Pisi to gather and scramble his way to the line.

Myler converted, and stretched Saints' lead with a penalty after a punishing scrummage.

The Warriors had lost hooker Pat MacArthur to an early injury - handing Georgian Shalva Mamukashvili a debut from the bench - and would lose loose-head prop Ryan Grant to a yellow card after another scrummage hit the deck in Northampton's 22.

Myler compounded Glasgow's early woes with another penalty on 22 minutes.

Luther Burrell laid the platform for Tuala's first with a terrific burst of power at first receiver, before the ball was spread smartly along the line to the winger, who broke Hogg's weak tackle, and left Mark Bennett - who clearly expected his full-back to bring down Tuala - standing still in frustration to trot in.

Myler missed the conversion and, straight from the kick-off, the Warriors won a penalty that Russell crashed off the right upright before the loose ball was thrown wildly over his own dead-ball line by hooker Mikey Haywood.

I feel that for  Glasgow this was the type of match they had to win to stand any chance in this year’s European cup but I do think that there is room for improvement this year. I think there fate might be sealed

EXETER 34-19 BORDEUX
WOODBURN DOUBLE GIVES EXETER WIN

The teams exchanged early tries through Woodburn and Nans Ducuing, but Exeter stretched clear through the boot of Henry Slade and Moray Low's try.

Ian Whitten scored Exeter's third try early in the second half.

And they secured the bonus as Woodburn finished off a counter-attack, Bordeaux bracketing that try with scores from Julien Rey and Yann Lesgourgues.

Exeter looked to play at a high tempo to run Bordeaux's bigger pack of their feet and they took the lead when young England back Slade - who showed some lovely footwork as he impressed in the 10 shirt - landed an early penalty.

The hosts were happy to play from deep and Slade's England team-mate Jack Nowell featured twice before Woodburn, signed from Bath in the summer, crossed in the corner to finish off an 80m attack.

Exeter always looked the livelier side but Bordeaux could never be entirely discounted and they scored a fine try of their own through full-back Ducuing.

However, Scotland prop Low somehow robbed Bordeaux of the ball at a maul near their line to score Exeter's second try and two Slade penalties gave them a 14-point half-time lead.

It was now just a question of whether the hosts could secure the bonus point and they added a third try as Whitten dummied and finished off another pacy attack two minutes into the second half.

And they added a fourth before the hour mark as Woodburn won a turnover, Slade showed his class as he countered from his own 22, and Woodburn was on hand to race over from 40m.

Bordeaux scored tries from Rey and Lesgourgues either side of Woodburn's second, but Exeter were deserved winners.

This is a match that tells me that Exeter arte definitely improving but there might be a few people need resting for Bordeux after a difficult world cup.

TOLOUSE 24- 18 ONNAX
MEDARD TRY GIVES TOLOUSE BIG BIN

Toulouse overcame fellow French team Oyonnax 24-18 to get their first win in this season's European Champions Cup this afternoon.Regis Lespinas kicked two early penalties for Oyonnax, but Luke McAlister replied with one of his own to keep the home side within range at half time. The wind and rain then increased and forced the game into a forward's match, but Timoci Matanavou crossed after the break to give Toulouse a try.

Maxime Medard got Toulouse's second on the hour mark, before Oyonnax got one for themselves after Vincent Martin crossed with 10 minutes left to play.Centre Gael Fickou scored a third for his side, but Fabien Cibray went over just one minute later to give Oyonnax a slim chance of victory.Nicky Robinson converted to keep his side within six points, but the visitors could not get through the black and red defence again and Toulouse came away with the win

I think that Tolouse will be one to watch out for in the European cup but I Have not heard about the other side too much.

friday rugby 20-11-15 ulster/saracens

FRIDAY

ULSTER 9-27 SARACENS
DUNCAN TAYLOR TRY HELPS SARACENS TO BONUS POINT WIN

Saracens made it two wins from two European Champions Cup games with an impressive bonus-point victory over Ulster in a cold and windswept Belfast.

Paddy Jackson kicked Ulster into a 9-0 lead before a Chris Wyles try left four points between the sides at the break.

Saracens dominated the second half with tries from Alex Goode, Duncan Taylor and Billy Vunipola.

Ulster, whose Pool 1 match with Oyonnax was called off after the Paris attacks, ran out of steam after a bright start

We will get the chance to see how well Ulster do later in the year but I think the European Cup quarters are already gone for them as Ulster should have had more energy in this match. It seemed like it went the opposite way entirely. For Saracens this is a good result

Friday, 20 November 2015

20-11-15 european cup ulster teams and predictions

Friday

Ulster v Saracens 7.45

Ulster: Louis Ludik; Andrew Trimble, Darren Cave, Stuart McCloskey, Craig Gilroy; Paddy Jackson, Ruan Pienaar; Callum Black, Rory Best (capt), Wiehahn Herbst; Dan Tuohy, Franco van der Merwe; Iain Henderson, Chris Henry, Nick Williams.

Replacements: Kyle McCall, Rob Herring, Ricky Lutton, Robbie Diack, Roger Wilson, Paul Marshall, Ian Humphreys, Peter Nelson.

Saracens: Alex Goode; Chris Ashton, Duncan Taylor, Brad Barritt, Chris Wyles; Owen Farrell, Richard Wigglesworth; Mako Vunipola, Schalk Brits, Petrus Du Plessis; George Kruis, Maro Itoje; Michael Rhodes, Jacques Burger, Billy Vunipola.

Replacements: Jamie George, Rhy Gill, Juan Figallo, Alistair Hargreaves, Jackson Wary, Neil De Kock, Charlie Hodgson, Marcelo Bosch.

I feel that if ulster are to get out of this group this is a match they have to win and I think the match will be close I would say Ulster by less than 7

Saturday

 Tolouse v Oyannax 3.15

I think that Tolouse will get the bonus point in this match as they are much the better side but you don’t know with French sides

Exeter v Bordeux 7.45

I feel that Bordeux will have too much for Exeter as this season is a learning experience for Exeter and this should be seen as a year ion year for this.

Glasgow v Northampton 5.15

If Glasgow are to make it into quarter finals in the next few years these are the types of matches that they must win. Northampton do well in England but not that well I see this as a win for Glasgow but by less than 7.

Scarlets v Racing 5.30

This is the type of match that Racing should win and win well away from home but there is something strange that happens when French teams play away. If Racing are spending their money well this should be an easy win.

Treviso v Leicester 1pm

Leicester must win this match with a bonus point to stand any chance in their pool as simple as that.

Bath v Leinster 3.15

I was disappointed in Leinster last week and I think that what would have been an easy win last season might be a lot harder this season. I think that Leinster will win but by less than 7 points

Sunday

Clermount v Ospreys  1

Ospreys are traditionally the welsh side that you would think would think could get a win from a match like this. I think that this match will go to Clermount but I do not think that Clermount will be able to take control of this match

Wasps v Tolon 5.15

This is the match where Wasps stand up and show that they are one of the best in Europe and with that win over Leinster last week you would think they would have no fear. I see this as a wasps win but by less than 3
