09-11-15 PREMIERSHIP RUGBY

PREMIERSHIP ENGLAND

Friday

Quinn’s 16-14 Sale

EVENS CHANGES THE FORTUNES OF QUINNS

Harlequins produced a resolute second-half performance to seal victory over Sale Sharks at the Twickenham Stoop.

Sale enjoyed the better of an error-strewn first half and led at the break through captain Dan Braid's try.

Tim Visser touched down to put Quins in front following a pinpoint crossfield kick from fly-half Nick Evans.

Sam James dived over to bring the visitors back to within two points before Danny Cipriani missed a penalty to put Sale ahead as Quins held on.

England reject Cipriani, whose game-management and kicking were magnificent for most of the evening, sliced his effort just wide of the left post eight minutes from time and then miscued an attempted last-minute drop-goal under pressure.

Quinns won this very close match and this was definitely a match that they could win. I could see them near the top but not there at the end of the season

Saturday

Exeter 19-6 Leister

STEVENSON 19 POINTS PUTS EXETER IN COMPLETE CONTROL

Gareth Steenson's haul of 19 points secured an impressive win for Exeter over Leicester in the Premiership.

The Chiefs fly-half stretched for the only try in the opening stages, before adding two penalties to give the hosts a 13-3 lead at the break.

Adam Thompstone had a try disallowed for the Tigers, who had only two Owen Williams penalties for their efforts.

Exeter are definitely the shock team of the tournament this season but I don't really know what it is that they can do. They are going to have to learn fast even to qualify for Europe

Northampton 6-12 Saracens

FARELL BOOT PUTS SARACENS ON TOP

England fly-half Owen Farrell kicked all of Saracens' points as they beat Northampton at Franklin's Gardens.

Saints, who topped last season's Premiership table and were boosted by the return of Wales wing George North, went ahead with Stephen Myler's kick.

But Farrell twice landed penalties to give Sarries a 6-3 half-time lead.

In a match dominated by breakdown battles and kicking for territory, two more Farrell penalties after the break secured victory for the 2015 champions.

Saracens on top of the table this season is definitely a very good season for them. I feel that they can keep this form up and reach the play offs

Irish 14-45 Bath

BATH BONUS POINT WIN GIVES THEM EARLY FORM

Bath ran in six tries as they made light of Sam Burgess's return to rugby league by beating 14-man London Irish.

Wales international Rhys Priestland's early penalty, followed by conversions of tries for both Leroy Houston and Ollie Devoto gave Bath a 17-0 lead.

Despite Irish scrum-half Brendan McKibbin's red card, Scott Steele's try whittled it back to 17-7 by the break.

But Bath ran in four second half-tries from Alafoti Faosiliva, Kyle Eastmond, Priestland and Nikola Matawalu.

Irish were always up against it from the 20th minute onwards after Australian scrum-half McKibbin was sent off for stamping on prop Henry Thomas's head.

And their only second-half response was a try from Fergus Mulchrone 11 minutes after the break, also converted by Shane Geraghty.

Former Exiles full-back Tom Homer, playing against his old club for the first time, then England fly-half George Ford took over Bath's second-half kicking duties.

Homer converted the first two before Ford came off the bench to also get on the scoresheet by improving the last two

A top 4 for Bath seems like a realistic target but Irish not picking up a point at this stage is definitely not a good sign for Irish I think that Irish can get out of their hole as they always do.

Woster 28-20 Newcastle

GROVE DOUBLE GIVES WOSTER VITAL WIN

Worcester ran in four first-half tries as they claimed a bonus-point win over Newcastle Falcons at Sixways.

Former Scotland centre Alex Grove scored twice after tries from Chris Pennell and new signing Bryce Heem, Tom Heathcote landing all four conversions.

Newcastle got back to within 11 points when Tom Catterick came off the bench to match Micky Young's try.

A penalty from Mike Delany, who also kicked both conversions, proved the game's only second-half score.

That left the frustrated Falcons, who had also kicked a first-half penalty through Catterick, just one score away from a losing bonus point.

Wosters mid table finish is an achievable target but for Newcastle they do look doomed in this battle to avoid the dr4op as they have done for the last few years

Sunday

Wasps 23-3 Gloucester

WADE TRY GIVES WASPS VITAL WIN

Wasps dominated Gloucester to record their second Premiership home win of the season as both sides had a man sent off at the Ricoh Arena.

Gloucester wing David Halaifonua was shown red for a high and late tackle before Wasps prop Lorenzo Cittadini punched Billy Twelvetrees off the ball.

Wasps winger Christian Wade burst through the visiting defence at pace for the only try of the first half.

A penalty try followed after the break as Elliot Daly also kicked nine points.

Gloucester had to wait until the 49th minute for their only score of the game as Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw kicked a penalty on his first appearance of the season.

By then, the Cherry and Whites were already 16 points behind after Wade's early try and two long-range penalties from Daly before Halaifonua's dismissal had them a man down.

Referee Ian Tempest and the television match official ruled foul play against his challenge on second-row Bradley Davies and things were soon to get worse for the visitors.

George Smith marshalled a driving maul to the line for Wasps, which Gloucester collapsed illegally and a penalty try was awarded.

Fly-half Ruaridh Jackson kicked the extras, but Wasps also had to see out the remaining minutes with 14 men.

Tight-head Cittadini was sent off after replays showed his fist had caught Gloucester captain Twelvetrees around the throat as the pair wrestled for possession.

Wasps closed the game out for their second win in the opening four rounds while Gloucester's first away defeat of the season saw them drop to ninth, a place below the victors.

Wasps seem to be having trouble picking up points and so do Gloucester and in English Rugby these 2 are both big clubs. I would be personally disappointed to see either in a relegation fight but that might just be what happens only they can sort this out and I hope they do
